Informations complémentaires

Ghent organised a Universal Exhibition in 1913 and renovated the entire medieval town centre in preparation of that event. Furthermore a totally new train station (Saint-Peters' Station) was built. The area which was used for the event was pacelled out and was filled with free standing houses showing us the various types of architecture which were popular in the 1920. The district was called the Millionaires-district, for obvious reasons.

The streets towards Saint-Peters' Station have fine examples of older architecture: neo-styles and Art Nouveau. The Citadel Park was also part of the 1913 event; today it houses the Musuem of Fine Arts and the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (SMAK). The coach also drives past the Bijloke, a medieval hospital which today houses the Municipal Museum of History, the Book Tower by Henry van de Velde and the Vooruit building built by the socialist unions at the beginning of the 20th century.

The tour on foot covers the highlights of the old town: St-James' church, Friday Market, Patershol, the Count's Castle, the Fish Market, the Old Harbour, the famous view of the three towers: St-Nicholas, the Belfry and St-Bavo. We don't forget the Meat Hall and the Town Hall and relax on one of the tarraces on the Koornmarkt or St-Bavo square.
